Are robotic pool cleaners worth it?
The short answer, most of the time they are. Maytronics Dolphin Robotic Cleaners are quite impressive. It comes down to what features you are looking for and how much effort you want to spend keeping your pool clean.
Most robotic pool cleaners do a very good job cleaning the pool without getting stuck. They also last a very long time because you don’t leave them in the pool everyday. Typically you only put them into the pool when the pool needs to be cleaned. They usually run for only two hours and the pool should be clean. If it is fall or winter and you are getting a lot of new debris in the pool every day you can leave them in the pool and run them daily, two times a week, or three times per week.
Robotic cleaners cost quite a bit less to run than a booster pump that may be needed for your pool cleaner. Booster pumps are all 3/4 hp and can use up to 1800 watts per hour. Depending on how much you are being charged per kilowatt hour from your electric company, it can cost you on average between 20 and 40 cents per hour to run. That adds up to between $12.00 and $24.00 per month to run the pump 2 hours per day. Compare this to the Maytronics Dolphin robotic cleaners costing about 5 cents per hour to run thanks to its 24 volt DC motor. Depending on how often you drop the cleaner into the water to clean your pool, it may save you hundreds per year.
The only disadvantage to a robotic cleaner in my opinion is the time you spend going outside and putting it into the pool. The cleaners are on a timer and will shut off after the set time without you turning it off.
Regular automatic pool cleaners like the Polaris have the distinct advantage of you leaving it in the pool and setting the timer and forgetting about it (besides cleaning the bag once a week). You can however leave your robotic cleaner in the pool at all time too if you like.
There are many versions and brands available. This is a case that is best described as “you get what you pay for”. The more you are willing to spend the more features you will get. The more expensive cleaners can sense where they are and some even memorize your pool. My suggestion is to pick a price range first and then read the features. Maytronics Dolphin Robotic cleaners are of very high quality. Here are some of my favorites. Good luck!
